What is a Ghost Vehicle?

A ghost vehicle is a vehicle that only exist on paper; no physical vehicle actually exists.

In this type of crime, vehicle identification numbers (VINs) are either falsely created, or, a legitimate VIN is compromised from a registered vehicle in another jurisdiction. That VIN is then registered and insured to a fictitious vehicle, otherwise called a ghost vehicle.

The fraudster will use a phony VIN number to insure the vehicle. They will then pay the premiums for a few months and report the vehicle as stolen, to eventually profit from the insurance company payout.

Équité Association continues to work in close collaboration with our member companies to combat this type of insurance fraud.
