Terri O'Brien

Terri brings over 25 years of experience in financial services, including all facets of risk management, fraud, leadership and growth strategies to Équité Association. Prior to Équité, Terri was Chief Risk Officer at Interac Corp., and has held senior executive roles at TD Bank, as well as other financial institutions earlier in her career. 

Her philosophy

An astute and innovative leader, Terri integrates risk practices into strategic planning and governance. Adept at both business management and technology-driven methodologies, Terri believes that people are the third foundational support for success. Her leadership focuses on communication, transparency and coaching, supporting both institutional and personal growth within her teams. 

Worth noting

With a double major in Finance & Systems Architecture, B.Comm from the Ted Rogers School of Business Management, Terri also has a history of serving her community. She is past board member of Centennial Infant & Child Centre, founding member of Women Vote, and testified in the House of Commons on Cybersecurity in the “Financial Sector as a National Economic Security Issue” in 2019. 

Ben Ashtiani

Ben is a strategic and hands-on Data Science Leader with over 15 years of experience delivering data-driven projects in various industries. Most recently, Ben was a senior leader at Sun Life for data science and analytics. His expertise spans: machine learning, mathematical modeling; advanced statistics and analytics; agile project management; optimization models; data mining; and more.

His philosophy

Ben is committed to lifelong learning and to empower his teams to make decisions and deliver. His principle is "Life is a balance of holding on and letting go" (quote from Rumi).

Worth noting

Ben has established and evolved analytics teams in different industries. He has led several projects including fraud detection, expedited underwriting, and recommendation systems. Ben has been an active member of the analytics community and the "Toronto Machine Learning Summit" steering committee the past few years.

Bryan Gast

Bryan Gast brings 30 years of experience in law enforcement, including a posting as Detective Inspector in the Criminal Investigation Branch with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP). His experience includes 19 years in the OPP Anti-Rackets Branch managing/investigating all facets of insurance fraud investigations, corporate fraud investigations, identity theft investigations, health care fraud investigations and other complex criminal investigations.  

His philosophy

Bryan recognizes the importance of stakeholder collaboration in the fight against fraud and strives to build and maintain partnerships.

Worth noting

Previously, Bryan has served as the National Director of Investigative Services at the Insurance Bureau of Canada. He was the Unit Commander of the OPP Anti-Rackets Economic Crimes and Corruption Unit, and Unit Commander of the OPP Anti-Rackets Branch Provincial Identity Crimes Unit.

Wendy Roth

Wendy is a skilled contract lawyer, privacy professional and corporate governance expert with more than 15 years in the P&C insurance industry and over 17 years of experience in corporate / commercial law, specializing in commercial contracts and transactions (including Tech, Data, IP), privacy law (PIPEDA, CPPA, GDPR, PHIPA), and IP/Data management / protection, legislative analysis, insurance law, etc. She has also served as a Corporate Secretary to several insurance industry Boards.

Her philosophy

Wendy believes in being adaptable to meet the changing needs of the organization, industry and stakeholders and is used to wearing multiple hats. She also strongly believes in the benefits of collaborating with stakeholders to access more ideas and leverage others for expertise to achieve mutual goals.

Worth noting

Wendy spent over 15 years working at the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) where she was responsible for re-building IBC’s corporate governance framework from the ground up and assisted the organization through many transitions. As IBC’s chief governance expert, she provided support to the Board, committees, and working groups, as well as serving as corporate secretary to various IBC sister associations. Wendy has held the pen on several submissions to the government with respect to proposed overhauls of privacy legislation and OSFI guidelines. Working at the industry trade association for so long has given her familiarity and understanding of the insurance industry, insurers and related stakeholders.

Dennie Theodore

Dennie is a communicator, facilitator, business leader who has contributed her strategy and change skills to TD Bank Group, Atlantis Systems International, Humber and Centennial colleges, Nortel, AT&T and more. Specializing in engagement, communications planning, and workplace strategy, Dennie has created and implemented programs for five to 50,000. Her experience incorporates business and not-for-profit, technology, financial services, arts, and education.

Her philosophy

Passionate about storytelling and shared outcomes, Dennie believes relationships are the heart of how information is transmitted and received.

Worth noting

An accomplished writer, speaker and senior leader, she has been heard at various events such as: the launch of Loblaw’s Women in Technology initiative; 8Billion Acts of Innovation & Deloitte’s “Rewriting the Human Story”; and the 2018 IABC National Conference. Awarded Women in Communications & Technology 2014 Leader of the Year, and a Cherie Blair Foundation Pan-Asian Mentor, Dennie also is PROSCI-certified, a member of the International Association of Business Communicators, and holds a certificate from the Canadian Association of Positive Psychology, along with an M.F.A. from the University of Alberta.
