Équité Association’s expert investigators are noting an increasingly common tactic of auto thefts targeting public places such as shopping malls, hotels and airports. Organized crime networks are evolving to find ways to continue to generate funds from auto theft, including insurance fraud, to fund international terrorism, guns and drugs.
Recent news articles highlighted the prevalence of auto theft from public lots including Go station parking lots, underground garages, gyms, airports and shopping malls. As Équité and its members work to minimize the impact of auto theft on honest, hardworking Canadians; here is a list of essential tips to help mitigate the risk of becoming a victim.
Essential tips to help mitigate parking lot-based auto theft
- Identify digital trackers - Thieves stalk vehicles in public lots and use small tracking devices to trace targeted vehicles. Download an app to detect if an unknown tracker is near your vehicle. If you detect a tracker upon entering your vehicle drive straight to the police station to have them inspect your vehicle to locate and remove it.
- Don’t get distracted - Distraction thefts occur when a thief engages the driver in conversation in a public place, while using an electronic device to capture/amplify key fob signals. Once the driver leaves their vehicle, the thief can unlock and steal it.
- Evaluate parking spots - Where possible, look for parking spaces that are well lit, monitored by security cameras or in a secure garage. Additionally, remove or hide valuables before you park.
- Install visible anti-theft devices - When thieves see additional anti-theft deterrents such as a steering wheel or pedal lock, or VIN window etchings, they are more likely to move on and look for an easier vehicle to steal.
- Install a vehicle immobilizer - Install a quality aftermarket immobilizer device with an ignition disabler that protects against relay attacks, reprogramming attacks and CAN bus attacks. Keep in mind, alterations to your vehicle may affect the vehicle’s warranty. Contact your vehicle's manufacture/dealer for more information prior to installation.
Canadians who are considering purchasing a vehicle should consult Équité's Most Stolen Vehicles list and inquire with their insurer if the vehicle is at high risk for theft.
